Project Overview

Created in partnership with BSI, this ongoing short film series brings to life the human stories behind certification — showing how structure, quality, and digital trust empower organisations to grow responsibly.

The first two films feature Phoenix Software and Genius Within, two companies using BSI certification to scale their impact while staying true to their people and purpose. Each film is designed to feel grounded, personal, and emotionally resonant — a world away from corporate messaging.

Together, they reveal how certification isn’t just a box to tick, but a framework that helps organisations stay human while building for the future.

Who Is BSI?

The British Standards Institution (BSI) is a global leader in business standards and certification, helping organisations across every sector work smarter, safer, and more responsibly.

Founded over a century ago, BSI partners with companies to develop and apply internationally recognised standards — from quality management (ISO 9001) to digital trust and information security (ISO/IEC 27001).

But beyond the technical frameworks, BSI’s mission is deeply human: to build trust in systems, ensure consistency across operations, and help organisations deliver positive impact for people and the planet.

In this film series, BSI’s role is shown not as a regulator, but as a partner in progress — helping each company grow with structure, purpose, and care.

Built on Trust

Genius Within creates digital tools that support neurodivergent people in the workplace. The film explores how ISO/IEC 27001 and BSI Digital Trust certification underpin their work — protecting user data while empowering inclusion.

Told through Fiona (Head of Product), Zaq (Head of Engineering), and Vicky (End User), the film shows how security, ethics, and empathy intersect in digital design.

Core message: Digital trust isn’t just about compliance — it’s about dignity, safety, and innovation that includes everyone.

The Brief

BSI approached us to create a series of short documentary-style films that would reframe the perception of certification. Rather than focusing on technical standards, the films would showcase real people, real businesses, and the meaningful impact of working with BSI.

Each story needed to:

  • Highlight the tangible benefits of certification

  • Feel human and emotionally engaging

  • Work both as stand-alone films and as part of a cohesive series

The challenge was to translate complex ideas — like ISO 9001 and ISO/IEC 27001 — into stories that anyone could connect with, regardless of industry.

2 of 3 — Phoenix Software “Structured to Scale”
How ISO 9001 helped Phoenix Software grow from 100 to 500 employees while keeping their culture, values, and people at the heart of the business.

Client: BSI
Agency: IRIS Worldwide
Type: Corporate Brand Story
Filmed: August 2025, York
Shoot Duration: 1 Day
Role: Self-Shooting Director
Deliverables: 3 x 90s Films

The Concept

At the heart of each film is a single idea: structure that supports people.
We built the series around a What / Why / How narrative structure — simple, clear, and emotionally driven:

  • What: Who the company is and what they do

  • Why: Why certification matters to them and their people

  • How: How BSI helped them build systems that make a difference

Each film opens with a small, real moment — a quiet gesture or slice of life that draws the viewer in — before widening out to reveal the broader story.

Visually, the films share a warm, natural aesthetic: soft light, authentic sound, and human rhythm. They’re far from stock footage — every frame feels lived-in and true to each company’s environment

Structured to Scale

Phoenix Software grew rapidly, from 100 to over 500 people, and needed to maintain its culture while scaling its systems. The film explores how ISO 9001 helped them stay consistent, confident, and people-focused as they grew.

Through the voices of Keith (Sales Director), Faye (Operations Director), and Trevor (Welfare Manager), the story balances strategy, structure, and humanity.

Core message: Growth doesn’t have to mean losing yourself. Structure can protect what makes a business human.

Production Approach

For this project, I worked closely with the team at IRIS Worldwide and their producers. They approached me with a clear creative goal from BSI — to move away from traditional, corporate storytelling and instead create a series of films that felt authentic, human, and emotionally engaging. From there, I expanded on the concept and developed the story structure for each film, shaping them around real people and genuine moments that reflected how certification impacts daily life.

In production, I operated as a self-shooting director, working with a local sound recordist in each location to keep the footprint small and unobtrusive. This allowed contributors to relax and be themselves on camera — a key part of achieving the natural tone BSI and IRIS were aiming for.

I collaborated closely with the IRIS producers throughout the shoots, ensuring that the creative direction remained aligned with BSI’s brand values and the tone of the wider campaign. This close partnership meant that the films felt both consistent and unique — each story tailored to its subject, but all connected by a shared visual and emotional language.

Results

The films have been praised for their tone, authenticity, and human storytelling — reframing certification as a tool for growth, empathy, and trust. They’ve resonated with audiences across sectors, helping BSI communicate their role as a partner in progress rather than a distant authority.

What’s Next?

The third film in the series, currently in pre-production, will continue the theme by exploring another organisation using BSI standards to drive positive change — showing how certification shapes culture, responsibility, and trust across different industries.
