As a self-shooting director based in London, I understand that interviews are at the heart of most documentary-style films.

Whether a contributor is speaking directly to camera, off-camera, seated, standing, walking or captured in a more observational way, each project requires a slightly different approach. Creating the right environment is key — helping people feel comfortable enough to speak openly and naturally.

For me, the interview process is one of the most important and enjoyable parts of filmmaking. It’s where the story begins to take shape. Spending time with contributors, understanding their perspective, and knowing when to listen or gently guide a conversation often defines the direction of the final film.

Lighting Approach

When it comes to lighting, I tend to keep things as natural as possible. Rather than over-lighting a scene, I prefer to work with what’s already there, adding when necessary and shaping or enhancing available light so the image feels considered but still true to life.

That said, every project is different. In more controlled environments, a traditional three-point setup can be the right choice. And if the brief calls for something more stylised or creative, I’m always happy to adapt the approach to suit the tone of the film.

Interview Direction

I’m comfortable leading interviews myself, guiding conversations in a way that feels relaxed and natural while still drawing out the story.

Equally, if a client or producer prefers to take the lead, I’m happy to support that and focus on capturing the moment as it unfolds.
